Samana Lounge, Vail Village, Saturday Evening - Tara's Birthday Party

Thing was, this was actually scaled down a lot from Kennedy's original plans, since her original plans had banked on being in Fandom for this party.

...that begged the question of how insane her original plans must have been, given she'd rented out a Vail nightclub (on short notice, and hadn't that taken some effort). One side of the room was occupied by the open bar (although unless you had really good fake ID, you'd be stuck with soft drinks), there was plenty of space on the dance floor, and the DJ looked a bit bemused by the collection of music he'd been given to work with tonight. There was a decent enough selection of modern rock, which had been Kennedy's contribution to balance out the majority of it: lots of ambiance, New Age-y, Loreena McKennitt-type stuff as provided by Raven.

A couple of servers circulated the room occasionally to replenish the trays of food set up on the tables near the walls, but the real piece de resistance was in the center of the room: a chocolate river. Okay, not a real chocolate river-- but courtesy of Ben and Ender's handiwork, there was a fountain of melted chocolate running down an elaborate trough, plates of fruit and cheese and fondue implements laid out along its "banks." There were ice sculptures on the various tables, too: whimsical little animals, like cats and otters and one unicorn that would probably end up a private source of amusement for four people. (Speaking of sources, Kennedy wasn't telling you what her hookup had been for getting those. Or why they were strangely resistant to melting.)

It wasn't quite as big-scale as she'd been planning on originally, but hey. It had turned out pretty good. Even if it wasn't a surprise; despite any efforts to be sneaky on her part, Kennedy totally failed at subtle anyway. Which wasn't the point; the point was, it was Tara's birthday, and that meant celebrating. So there.

Like you do. There's tons of moddable finger foods, and that open bar, not to mention a hell of a lot of chocolate fondue.

Faramir had found the invitation and even he had only met Tara on this trip, it was only polite to be present. It would be good to see how a birthday was celebrated here.

Sadly enough, the waiter behind the bar once more asked for his ID and Faramir had to settle for apple juice. This was starting to get bothersome.

Raven wasn't going near the bar, thank you very much. And she was a little suspicious of the chocolate fondue after the hot chocolate incident, but she knew Kennedy wouldn't spike something without telling her, so she helped herself to some. And then some more. Mmmm.

Ender didn't exactly know Tara, as such. But he'd put in a fair bit of work on the fountain, and it was as good an opportunity as anything to show that he hadn't been locked up in his room all week.

Honest.

So he arrived, and stole interested glances at the room itself, and everyone in it.

Dolf made it there in time (an incident on the slopes had knocked him on his ass for a few hours) but barely. He didn't know Tara all that well, so he hadn't been able to come up with much of a gift - it wasn't like he had any cash in his pockets, either.

But he was there, at least, eyes nearly popping out of their sockets.

Bypassing the finger foods* entirely, Maladicta went for a nice cup of coffee. Predictable, yes. Not hallucinating anything, also yes!

So it was all for the best.


*...it's possible 'finger foods' had a more literal meaning on the Disc.

Well, duh Bobby was there. And eating. And mingling. Although every so often he'd get a distracted look on his face for a few seconds as he glanced over at the various ice sculptures.

Ben was telling himself that he wasn't eating too much chocolate, thank you very much, he was just testing the structural integrity of the river.

Ben was full of it.

He was also looking around the room, noting familiar faces. He'd been spending most of the vacation not really being social.

Of course Sookie was here. She'd made the cake! Plus, you know, even if she'd been entirely unaffiliated with the party, she'd have shown up with bells on.

Maybe not literally.

But she had a little plate of food all the same, and please, like she'd be leaving alone that chocolate fondue? River of chocolate! It was a river of chocolate. Good luck keeping her away from it.

Oh, Karla didn't need to be told to mingle or eat. Though she was going to spend a minute just staring in delight at the chocolate river. Ben and Ender were amazing.

Tahiri was hardly doing this because Kennedy had asked; she wasn't particularly fond of Kennedy at all. But she still considered Tara someone she owed a lot to, and for that she wouldn't have missed this.

Okay, for that and for the strawberries dipped in chocolate. Ben and Ender had done quite the job on that project, last-minute as it had been, even if Tahiri wanted to roll her eyes at Kennedy. Some people didn't know moderation. Honestly.

Far be it from Alexander to miss a party celebrating the day of Tara's birth. They never really spoke much, probably on account of both of them being fairly reserved, but he had always enjoyed when they did speak. So there he was. Arriving. Mingling. Eating.

Duh. Party. Ariel was so there, especially with a new shirt (http://www.quiksilver.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4028125&cp=2981772.2981779.2978641) from a shop in town to wear.

And she was glad she came, too, because, ohmygosh, they did a fantastic job! She didn't even really know Tara, but that never really stopped her coming to enjoy all the hard work that went into a party.

As the thrower of this party, Kennedy felt entitled to at least one round on the dance floor with the guest of honor. At least.

The song she'd chosen for this dance put to rest any doubt that she had a complete mushball side, if there was any left after the grin on her face as she led Tara out onto the floor.

Tara was decked out in the dress Kennedy had helped her pick out, and she'd pinned her hair up with assorted glittery little things. If she was still a little self-conscious about the look, that was quickly forgotten by how dazzled she was by the entire thing. She filled a plate with fondue and took a seat where she figured people could find her easily, snacking and wondering if it'd be unbecoming to start just drinking from the chocolate river.

Her smile was incandescent.

Picking a gift had not been easy, for one Faramir barely knew Tara but it seemed rude to not bring anything. Her worried that perhaps the gift would prove too modest, but somehow he thought that most people would enjoy it (if you were not a coffee addicted vampire).

So on the table was a wrapped pack of cocoa powder which the shopkeeper had assured him was the finest brand to be found anywhere.

Raven had bought Tara a necklace and pair of earrings, along with a handcarved wooden box to put them or anything else in. And the purchases had helped feed animals, so she figured Tara would approve of that as well.

So, it was maybe not the most ethical thing to break into a kitchen in order to make a cake. But she'd done it, with Bobby's help, because store-bought cake was simply an unacceptable prospect.

So she'd spent a fair amount of time not only making the cake but icing it and yes it said Tara on it, duh, and overall, she was pretty happy with the end result.
