Kennedy's Apartment, NYC, Late October 2002

Oh, today was so not going according to plan, and poor Bailey had scurried to hide in the linen closet not long after Kennedy had woken up and realized what was going on.

She'd had a hot date lined up for tonight, and waking up to equipment she didn't want and really never wanted to be this close to ever again in her life? Not a good sign for said date going well at all. And then she'd had to call to try and reschedule it, which-- yeah, there had been no good way to explain why some guy who sounded nothing like her was making these arrangements, and falling back on the old sweet-talk technique backfired spectacularly...

So basically, Kennedy was stuck spending the night alone in her apartment, watching TV, eating ice cream, and bitching up a storm to Constance over email.

When is a matter of perspective ever going to have anything to do with this? she typed in response to the latest message, THIS ISN'T FUNNY.

If she didn't know any better, she'd swear Constance was trolling her.

Right, Wesley had just wrapped up one of the most painful conversations ever, so Kennedy was getting a phone call.

Thaaaat did not sound like her. The sulkiness, sure, he'd heard that before, but the general octave was off.

"In the not-actually-my-own-at-the-moment flesh," Kennedy confirmed, shooting a death glare at the ceiling. "I swear, it's me, and Fandom has some fucking stupid timing for pulling this crap."

Yeah, excuse that slight noise, Kennedy. It was definitely not a chuckle. Nope.

"Well, that would exclaim the shrieking." Someone hadn't left his room today, nope.

"Got people there too, huh?" Kennedy asked, glaring at her phone now. She heard that, Wesley. "Woo. Yay, I'm not the only one. Well, I feel vaguely better now."

It probably didn't help.

"What, ah... what did you have planned?"

"I had a date tonight," Kennedy informed him, in the tone of voice that hinted she had just explained everything. "Had."

"That is, er. Quite unfortunate."

"Go, go, mad Watcher understatement skills," Kennedy grumbled. "Seriously, I was looking forward to this all week, and then hello, cold shower."

"Not literally, because wow, is this ever a turnoff."

Ew! No, he couldn't. At least, he didn't want to.

"You know," Kennedy said after a moment, "as much as I could be flattered if I chose to interpret this as you entertaining those thoughts? I'm gonna pretend it's totally not that way. Because that feels vaguely wrong."

"Oh, so I suppose I owe you a thank-you," he recalled. "For, ah, your advice from this summer. It was really quite helpful."

Actually he'd totally failed and switched to whining. Details, really.

Fell off a walkway last week, fighting a minion, Dinah sent back. Wrist, ankle, ribs, concussion. Tony Foster had this happen the year before me. Still a surprise.

Dinah sighed, and squirmed. Gotta tell the BF tonight. Or tomorrow, if this lasts.

She paused to peer into the hallway and see if Bailey had surfaced from the linen closet yet. Nope.

Yeah, not even a headache now. Raven & Karla took off the worst of it, checked me over. No big problems. Dinah appreciated that in a big way. Guilt was no fun on top of the ow-ow-ow.

You know what? Kennedy decided after a moment. Fandom so needs to have, like, sessions for graduating seniors on how to cope with this weirdness back in the real world, or our dating lives are all fucked and not in the good way forever.
